Update X: MIDI Designer 2.99
Available for Download Since Feb 19, 2019 | [Pro 2]
Hello MIDI Designer users!
2.99 has some smaller improvements to keep our most-advanced users happy.
- We’ve fixed how out-of-bound controls get placed on the page. This will make editing iPad layouts on iPhone way less tortuous. It doesn’t use fancy AI (just brute force space-finding algo), but it’ll handle a lot more cases than before. Also, check the LOG if you want to see how the thing is working (thanks Josef for suggesting and testing on this one).
- If your Design Properties Pane was sticky, it’ll be sticky when you get back in to Design Mode. Thanks Todd for your patience on this one.
- Fixed a bug that incorrectly disallowed adding subcontrols in complex relationships (thanks Michael)
Issues on iPhone X and iPhone XS — Some users have reported issues with Design Mode in MIDI Designer Pro 2 on the iPhone X and the iPhone XS. These issues will be fixed in an upcoming release, so please hang tight.
Best!

Update X: MIDI Designer 2.97
Available for Download since October 14, 2018 | [Pro 2]
MIDI Designer Pro 2 version 2.97 is all about our Pedalboards functionality. With Pedalboards, MDP2 becomes a tactile heads-up display for your hardware MIDI controller. MDP2 currently supports the MIDI Fighter Twister, the Novation Launchpad MK2, and our very own, upcoming pedalboard, the MIDI Beast.
Features all users will find useful, even without an external MIDI controller:
- Add time-based delays to your output StreamByter rules! StreamByter by Audeonic — incorporated into MDP2 as an IAP — is the missing link, allowing you to parse incoming MIDI (e.g., to break up sysex) and modify outgoing MIDI (e.g., for conditional transposition)
- Smart Positioning for Make Similar: create a control and place it. MDP2 will know where to place the next one automatically.
- Automatic Ticks for Button Group Supercontrols: supercontrols now automatically update display min, max and # of ticks based on button subs.
- New Drag to Swap Action: Position/Size
- New Drag to Swap Action: Position/Size & Supercontrols
Features for Pedalboards:
- Pedalboard feedback for the MIDI Beast, the Novation Launchpad MK2, and the MIDI Fighter Twister.
- Automatic supercontrols on Pedalboards: controls placed on Pedalboards are automatically supercontrols.
- Pedalboards now slide up and down (resolving a major hindrance for assigning pedalboard supers to subs on normal pages)
- Pedalboard page properties now in a separate panel (which will host much greater functionality in the future)
- New Subcontrol option: Momentary & Return to Last Page
Defect fixes:
- Fixed Exclude from Reset to Default (thanks qdrtshlz, see qa/6605)
- Fixed big incoming sysex processing for Streambyter (thanks Stuart!)
- Lifted the 256-byte broken-up sysex limit to 4096 bytes (thanks again, Stuart!)
- Fixed Panel CC offset to not adjust panels with Make Similar
- Fixed Default Value Picker math (thanks again, qdrtshlz!)
- Added “hide keyboard” button to exit Stream Byter on iPhone
We know, we know: we’ve got a lot of explaining to do about this update! Watch our Instagram, FB and Twitter for detailed descriptions of how all of these new functionalities work. Our new Community Manager, Mitch Lantz, is working hard to keep everybody in the loop (while designing his own killer layouts, too).

MIDI Designer Pro 2 version 2.96 is a huge step forward for our most advanced users. We’re introducing the Stream Byter Plugin by Audeonic. The Plugin provides MIDI manipulation in two places: before MIDI Designer processes the MIDI, and before the MIDI produced by MIDI Designer gets sent to a Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Virtual or Hardware target via CoreMIDI.
Stream Byter was initially released in May ’13 as a way to extend MidiBridge 1.5 ‘out in the field’ for customers and has been continuously improved since then. The Stream Byter in Midi Designer is the ‘Stream Byter II’ version that exists in Audeonic’s MidiFire app (iOS/macOS).
What does Stream Byter do? It allows you to make custom MIDI processing modules that you design yourself using a concise programming language made up of rules. There are simple rules for matching and transforming MIDI events and more complex rules for writing modules that behave conditionally, set/examine variables, perform math/timing operations, and of course, generate MIDI messages.
Here is a very simple case: you are playing a keyboard and you decide that you want to turn a single knob (“reverb,” for instance). The higher (to the right) you go on the keyboard, the louder the reverb gets.
That’s a single line match/transform Stream Byter Input rule:
9X = BX 5B X2
The above rule can be summarized as follows: For every note event received, set the value of the ‘reverb’ controller number (on same channel as note) to the MIDI note number of the note.
Rules can be joined. Imagine you want to toggle the value of another knob from top to bottom every time you hit an A3 on the keyboard, but you don’t want the message to go out for 10 seconds? That’s another rule. Generally rules do one or more of these things, and often combine them:
- decompose and recompose longer MIDI messages
- filter MIDI messages
- transform MIDI messages
- produce more MIDI messages
The first case, decompose MIDI messages, will be useful for parsing incoming sysex dumps for hardware synths that produce parseable sysex dumps for patches.
Writing Stream Byter rules does require knowledge of the MIDI protocol and how to construct rules correctly. There is an introductory tutorial on the Audeonic site and the full Stream Byter manual is available there too. There is also a dedicated section to the Stream Byter on the Audeonic forum. Midi Designer customers are welcome to post questions or requirements there where the developer and other Stream Byter users will help out.
Stream Byter input and output rules are saved and shared with your layout. Any MIDI Designer Pro 2 user may open a layout with rules someone else has authored free of charge. There’s an in-app purchase to author or edit Stream Byter rules. This IAP will be available upon release of MIDI Designer Pro 2.96. It will be priced at $1.99 for the first three months, and then return to its normal price of $8.99.
In addition to the Stream Byter Plugin, Version 2.96 provides Slow Reset to Default. When a supercontrol button is set to “Reset to Default,” it can now also snap the subcontrol to its value over time. This gives you a slow reset and a precursor of what’s to come with presets.

2017 kicks off with 2.52… Happy New Year! 2.5.2 is a small correction.

Update X: MIDI Designer 2.5.1
Available for Download since December 14, 2016 | [Pro 2]
2.5.1 handles backwards compatibility problems with panel colors introduced in 2.5 or earlier. As my dog told me: “if the Platinum layouts don’t look right, then the problem is the Platform.”
Particularly broken was the TG77/SY77 layout by Ibo Kai. This fixes that and gets panel colors right, too.
This version also handles a problem where “send on only” buttons — including ALL program change buttons and bank/program change buttons — were not sending the first time they are hit (thanks Nikolai).
Update X: MIDI Designer 2.5.0
Available for Download since December 10, 2016 | [Pro 2]
Hello MIDI Designer Community! We’re adding new features and fixes to make the best MIDI controller experience for iOS even better.
MIDI Designer Pro 2 v2.5 is a heavy upgrade, providing more flexibility for your rig design.
New Features
- Moveable (i.e., “Movable”) Panels: put controls on panels, move them around, and even use “make similar.” This feature is very useful as is, and we’ve got big plans for it.
- Display Zero for Knobs, Sliders and Crossfaders: now the LED ring (knobs) or LED track (sliders/crossfaders) can extend out from any point along its path. Two typical cases are pan knobs (Display Zero is 50% up) and Hammond-organ bars (Display Zero is 100% up). Requires Extra Features Pack to include in a layout; free to use for all.
- Rotary action for knobs. This is useful to place knobs near the top or bottom of your pages. It also means we’re compatible with gadgets that stick on your screen and rotate, if that’s your thing. Requires Extra Features Pack to include in a layout; free to use for anybody.
- Now you can slide your pages down or up to expose pedalboards. And if you don’t allow pedalboards in Play Mode, they’ll snap shut when you exit Design Mode.
- Choosing the default value: the experience has been upgraded in all ways. And now, Default Values work properly with Named Ticks, even if your ticks’ MIDI values are out of order (e.g., 5, 127, 2)
Xcode 8, iOS 10
Lots and lots and lots of code changed in the upgrade to iOS 10 (Swift 3 and Xcode 8). See something, say something! Please report all bugs to wtf [at] mididesigner.com
Fixes
- Fixed: Now no MIDI values are sent on MIDI Designer start, layout load, page load, nor reset to default template (Config -> Actions -> New)
- Fixed: Default values for named ticks
- Fixed: Bluetooth popup bug for iPhone introduced in 2.4.6
- Fixed: Smaller bugs, and lots of under-the-hood improvements to make MD even better.
Thanks for using MIDI Designer Pro 2!

Update X: MIDI Designer 1.3.7
Released July 24, 2012 [article]
- A substantial part of the MIDI Subsystem has been overhauled. This does not affect Wifi connections for the most part. New UI is provided to disable hardware connections and inter-app vitual connections. Also, virtual MIDI ports have been added for MIDI Designer. - Rolling over buttons reverses their state. Touch your finger to a momentary or toggle button and slide it to any other. The button will reverse state if it's toggle. For momentary buttons, the button activates while touched. - New advanced property for sliders, "Send on Release" has been added. This allows knobs, sliders, etc. to NOT send (nor affect subcontrols) until the touch ends. This is very useful for program changes and lighting effects, where you do not wish the audience to see/hear the intermediate states of a knob movement. Thanks to François Desnoyers for the suggestion. - New Feature: Snap to Value. Momentary and Toggle buttons that are supercontrols can move to a value over a certain number of milliseconds OR at a fixed speed. Thanks to thedazman for this suggestion. - Fixed many inconsistent corner cases in the supercontrol-subcontrol interaction. - Fixed defect: supercontrols are inverting low-high range when one or more values are not 0-127. - Fixed momentary-supercontrols to handle max values below .5 - Fixed defect: On XY Pad, y numeric label is using min, max and ticks from x numeric label on XY Pad - Fixed defect: knob now accommodates (recenters) numeric label correctly when number of ticks changes.
Update X: MIDI Designer 1.3.6

Update X: MIDI Designer 1.3.5
Released on June 3, 2012 [article]
GAME CHANGERS - Sliders, crossfaders and buttons are now aspect ratio independent and can be huge, tiny or anywhere in between. Most controls have a new design and all are 100% retina ready. - Name labels are independently sizable (and supersizable). - New, fixed-width LED font used in many parts of the app. - LED Colors (affect all controls, including button-on color) are now choosable per page. With 256 choices the newest MIDI Designer lets you make beautiful pages that are easy to recognize. - Pro and Lite users can randomize color-texture-LED all in one press. - Pro users now have 104 page colors, allowing for subtle individual choices. - Automatic reverse colors on Page Tabs, name labels and buttons for darker page colors. - Labels are now always in back of controls. This allows for watermark-like effects. - Panels are back (new control type)! They always sit behind labels for maximum flexibility, and they're borderless for geometric-shape making. - Fixed: can now receive sysex messages of up to 256 bytes from hardware. Tested with Line6 MIDI Mobilizer, iRig MIDI and iConnect. LARGE ENHANCEMENTS - Updates to make pedalboards feature work correctly with two-way hardware (like BCR2000): - Value pickup on pedalboards with option for each pedalboard - Make supercontrols not send own values ever if they are coming in from hardware - Reduced first-load speed by 50% in many cases - New 3D Splash Screen, icon and iTunes Artwork - Page and control properties now appear in strategic location, not near the control source - New tutorial screens - Page color picker now has separate random texture and random color. Colors have names, too. NEW CONTROL PROPERTIES - Added switches for individual supercontrols on pedalboards - Force Toggles to work with Momentary Hardware for Individual Supercontrols on Pedalboards - Force Pickup for controls insists that pickup is on even if it's off for that pedalboard - Added Force Momentary To Not Be Stepper for individual supercontrols - Momentary buttons have a "Do Not Send Off" option (automatically on for program change and bank select) - Added new MIDI Message Type Note On/Note On CONFIGURATION ENHANCEMENTS - Added confirm yes/no to assign current values to defaults - Added hardware display for hardware connections in Config FIXED DEFECTS - Fixed suspended mode 10-minute termination - Fixed small issues with copy pedalboard to page - Fixed rare page load and overlapping controls issue - Flurry analytics update (privacy) - Fixes for robustness of iRig and MIDI Mobilizer II Detection, elimination of potential crashes, improvement of automatic reconnection
