I cannot see my iPad in the directory - MIDI Designer Q&A

Hi and thanks for your question. You definitely don't need to forward the ports on your router unless your iPad is connected to another subnet/router entirely. You also don't need to add your iPad manually. The Bonjour stuff should work straight out of the box. Do not forward any ports on your router.

First, a silly question: is the iPad and the computer connected to the same router? Can you verify that? Also, you need to start MIDI Designer (or another MIDI app) on the iPad, otherwise the computer will not see it.

Can MIDI Designer see the computer?

Check mididesigner.com/connect if you haven't already.

Looking forward to getting you connected, even if it takes a couple rounds of comments.
Yes if I log in to my router I can see my iPad connected to it, and the network name is the same on my PC as well as my iPad. I had MIDI disigner running while running rtpMIDI. No MIDI designer could not see the PC.

I did get it working via ad hoc connection though only with out security. If I placed a password on the wpa2 security it would not let me connect from the iPad after entering the correct pass word. But unsecured it worked great I was able to map some stuff in serato sl.

I have since removed the port forwarding.
Hmmm.... this is a basic networking issue. It might have to do with the permissions with which you installed RTP. But let's see if the iPad can "see" the computer at all. It sounds like you're pretty technical. Can you download ping for iPad http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/free-ping/id430758871?mt=8 and make sure the iPad can ping the computer, please? That's first.

I am beginning to think this is some sorta issue with my router. I can ping either laptop on my network (that are both connected wifi)from my hard-lined dest top PC, but if I try to ping from any wifi device to any other wifi device on my network it fails. Net working is a weak point of mine though I'm not sure if that is normal operation or not.
Ok looks like I solved this problem. I set the windows firewall to accept inbound connections on a public network. This cleared it up though I'll have to check my home network still.
great stuff. by the way, the Q&A site has moved so you won't get updates on this question. However, check http://mididesigner.com/qa-old/88. Your contribution is greatly appreciated.

I SOLVED IT!!!
I enabled network sharing and discovery (and re-enabled many services with it... see youtube for help)
I turned itunes wifi sync ON.
but I think the killer move was to reinstall rtpmidi from an admin command-prompt.
