Here are some screenshots of my UI for the FM engine inside the Kronos. My iPad is connected via USB to the K, and mounted at eye-level above the Kronos' touchscreen.
I rely heavily on the Pedalboard function, so that most of the sound designing is done on the Kronos 8 knob x 16 button x 8 sliders. This is a format I intend to carry through to control my other connected synths -- Blofeld, Minitaur 2nd page functions, Perform VE, Integra. Goal is to keep everything uniform with that 8 x 16 x 8 layout, so that things remain more physical rather than touchscreen.
Load layout, look at ipad, twist physical knobs. Quick and easy, and consistent.
I want to dispel the notion that the Kronos is too complicated to program. I hope this catches on with other Kronos owners with iPads. Knobs and sliders are fun, fast, and intuitive!
My biggest breakthrough was discovering that Crossfaders with Named Ticks can be made very small (essentially just a text box!) and yet step through pre-chosen values. In the pictures below, the medium sized rectangles are buttons triggered by the Kronos buttons. They are supercontrols to step through values determined by their crossfader subcontrols... the text below each button is actually a crossfader that not only describes the parameter value, but lets you change them as well.
For example, the Detune amount can be changed by clicking Kronos button 10 (left page) or 14 (right page). Alternatively, the user can choose to touch the ipad and swipe left or right to change detune amount (the "label" below the detune button). Every small text box throughout the UI that looks like this is actually a crossfader!
I passed the 1000 mark for number of controller used so far! This is just for Bank 7 and half of Bank 1. Bank 8 will also be a MOD7 template, but for engine 2. (Each Kronos program contains 2 engines). The other banks will hold templates for the Kronos Poly6, MS-20, AL1 (general VA synth, will need 2 banks also due to complexity), a bank for Common Voice parameters shared between both engines (FX, Drum Track, KARMA, etc). I'm also thinking of dedicating a Bank to either a Drum Machine or Step Sequencer.
A separate Layout will be needed for the Kronos HD1 "rompler". I think I will also include some Kronos sequencer functionality to make it more fun to record. That will hopefully also include a detailed template for creating Wavesequences, something along the lines of the just released Korg Wavestate. Probably a bit over-ambitious, but they say making your goals public can help you achieve them...
Constructive feedback welcome.
