How can I create real time messages, e.g. 'START' and 'STOP'

System Real-time messages "start" and "stop" cannot currently be sent from MIDI Designer. However, since MD cannot generate MIDI clock nor MTC it kind of made sense not to have these (to me). What are you trying to control? This is something that could be included in a release in the near future, however: let's make sure you need this for your use-case.

I would like to remotely control a KORG i40M Intelligent Arranger. As well as changing programs it would be important to Start/Stop the arranger and change the Tempo, hence the need for Real Time Messages. I read somewhere that Real Time Messages could be embedded within SYSEX but every time I try to do this the values I type in are automatically changed to 7F when I apply the edits. I have used a hardware controller in the past (a Peavey PC-1600) that worked flawlessly, it would be nice to have the same capability in a software controller.

Another thing I noticed, when I created a volume slider and wanted to include a MUTE button, the editor did not present me with CC 7 (volume), only CC 11 (expression). While this worked for my machine, not all MIDI rigs recognize CC 11. There is more than one situation I can think of when I would like to preset an exact volume, including MUTE.

Hi Don, as you've seen, we've taken this offline (onto email) for now. I'll answer this question when we've worked through it a bit. As I noted, regarding the CC, unselect the little "unused" button below the channel-cc. Thanks!

Update

Start and stop are coming for 1.3.8. Approximate schedule:

2012-Aug-11: We're talking about the current version, 1.3.7.
2012-Aug-15: 1.3.8 should be submitted
2012-Aug-24: 1.3.8 should be released
