Hi robw!

From what I've been able to learn, native MIDI support is slowly being worked on the OBS software, but will take time. In the meantime, you'll have to use something like midiStroke or MidiKey2Key.

Hope it helps. Looking forward to see what you will be able to do!
Ed.
Thanks Ed! Rob, we'd also love to know about any blockers you encounter on the path towards using OBS. If it were necessary to build something, we would hope a third-party would step in and provide a MIDI to OBS converter...

Best!
Dan
This should be possible. Follow these steps:

Define single character hotkeys in OBS.

Connect MD to midiStroke. Use CCs only in your MD layout.

In MidiStroke convert CCs to the single character hotkeys you defined in OBS.

Only caveat is that renaming scenes in OBS will be affected by the single hotkeys you defined, so turn off the hotkeys if you need to rename scenes in OBS.
just seeing this... yup.  that's what I do.  MIDI Designer Pro 2 plus Midi Stroke lets MIDI Designer Control absolutely anything on your comp very easily.  I'm sure this is pretty known by now! If not though MIDI Stroke lets you turn MIDI messages into keystrokes.... so anything with hotkeys can be controlled by MIDI Designer.
Glad you got it sorted... any chance you could post a rough video showing this? No pressure, most importantly: enjoy (and happy 2020)!
