Summary: Master Layout Designer Ibo Kai brings us his Complete Editor, a Platinum Layout, for the Yamaha reface DX.
Yamaha released the Reface Mobile Mini Keyboards at Summer NAMM of 2015, including the exciting reface DX. DX is synonymous with FM synthesis since the 1980s. The reface DX itself is a modern version of the DX100, which is one of the most underrated synths of the 1980s. Like the DX100, the reface DX focuses on portability. Some things are the same as the DX100, and some, like the built-in speaker.
This editor is the basis for the related performance editor, and includes five pages, including: "Quick Access" Parameters, Operator Controls, Common Parameters, and 2 FX Units, Master Settings, and Util. Like all of Ibo Kai's layouts, it's beautiful, functional, and takes the reface DX to a whole new level.
Finally here is my full editor for Yamaha´s brand-new Reface DX, which I used as a basis for my performance editor.
"Quick Access" Parameters: On the first page you will find the "quick access" parameters, which on the keyboard are managed by the four keys titled "FM". The only difference here is that I had to make separate knobs for coarse and fine tuning. On the right side are 12 buttons to select the algorithm. I followed the graphical arrangement and layout of the Reface´s display (square button > carrier, round button > modulator).
Operator Controls: The 2nd and 3rd page provide all controls for each operator on a half page.
Common Parameters: Next are the common parameters such as LFO, pitch EG, some others and voice name.
2 FX Units, Master Settings, and Util: On the last page I put the 2 FX units on the left and some master settings on the right. I just skipped the "Fine Tune" function, because A) Yamaha made it fairly complicated in sysex and B) because I couldn't imagine a use-case for this. Finally there is a "Init" button, which initializes the layout, however I could´t find a sysex message for it, so you also have to perform that right on the keyboard to have both Reface and MD in the same default setting.
