MIDI Target Manufacturer(s): Adobe
Summary: MIDI to control Adobe Lightroom? Of course! This layout controls a plugin for Mac and Windows called MIDI2LR... this basic layout will give you big ideas for where to go next.
This is something a little different from the "Control All The Things" department. Developer Parth Davé recently released a free plugin for Mac or Windows called MIDI2LR, which allows you to use any MIDI controller to edit images in Lightroom (version 6 or CC). Since photographers around the world are sure to be snatching up cheap MIDI controllers like nobody's business, I figured I'd take the next step and make one you can use for FREE!
Here's a short video showing how to set up and use everything:
This basic layout will work with MIDI Designer 12 and the free MIDI-only version of Music IO. If you're using Lightroom on WIndows or don't want to plug your iPad into your computer, you can also set up MIDI over wireless (Google it).
The steps to set this up are very simple and straightforward:
- Install MIDI2LR on your Mac, and add the plugin to Lightroom using the instructions on the download page.
- Install Music IO: MIDI over USB on your iPad, and install the Music IO server app on your Mac. (This will also work with the full version of Music IO.)
- Install MIDI Designer 12 (or MIDI Designer Pro) on your iPad
- Download the layout and open it in MIDI Designer (from email, DropBox, etc)
- Download the mapping file and load it into MIDI2LR
- Open all the apps and ensure that Music IO is connected.
- Make pretty pictures.
Watching the video may help if you run into issues, and if you get totally lost, just post in the comments.
