Hi,
Sounds like fun!  Although the MIDI Designer guru is on a short break this week, I can personally see no reason why this cannot work. As long as you can get the buttons talking and listening MIDI, you can setup MIDI Designer to respond, toggle and cycle differing outputs..

I know that Doepfer have various MIDI controller boards that may be able to do some of the conversion work.  The CTM64 Contact To MIDI Interface and MTC64 as examples but maybe you have already have that figured out :)

In terms of MIDI Designer responding and reacting to external inputs, it's creator produced a YouTube video on Pedalboards here:-

Best of luck with your awesome sounding rig and hope you come up with a solution!  Others may have more to add here?
Hi and thanks for your question. Also thanks for your awesome comment as always, popup.

We're thinking about ways to do this right now, particularly with a pedalboard controller that we are building and prototyping. We'll see how we get through it. For right now: momentary buttons will trigger toggles in MIDI Designer by default. This might be part of the solution...
