Thanks for your question! When you say "current Apple design standards" you would want aspect-ratio independent sliders like... Mainstage? I'd love to find a great example of A/R free controls that look good.

I'm happy to dialog about this and even entertain suggestions about how the controls are currently drawn. Before that, though, take a slider and put it through its paces as far as aspect-ratio and see how it changes. 

Regarding background colors and textures, there are several issues. However, if you want to make a small, desaturated, repeating graphic which is a multiple of 64 pixels square, I would consider it for inclusion in the app.
