MIDI Target Manufacturer(s): Korg
The King Korg Neo is a smaller 37-key version/re-release of the well regarded King Korg 61-key Virtual Analog synth from 2013. I caved and bought one last week while it was on a half price sale. That's the only reason I bought it. It's a great synth but the vast majority of the parameters are hidden by menu diving. The panel controls are terribly limited. Menu diving while you're trying to create new sounds is as conducive to the creativity process as having a tooth pulled.
MidiDesigner to the rescue!
This panel completely transforms the synth into something you can actually create new sounds with...without the headache of menus. The Neo can use Midi CC for a number of controls but it isn't as expansive as the control obtained by using Sysex, not mention, users can easily change the CC numbers for each parameter meaning if I used it I couldn't guarantee that this panel would work on all Neo synths. I decided to go down the Sysex route instead as this is hard coded in the firmware and global.
Bugs in the SoundTower App
SoundTower make a application to control the King Korg Neo but our MidiDesigner version works better as I found 3 bugs in some of SoundTowers controls that stopped it from working correctly because the Sysex is incorrect. Plus, the SoundTower app will not work on iPad like this.
Notes
1. If a parameter can be controlled by a knob/button on the synth itself, it is not included on this panel. This panel compliments the synth, it doesn't replace it.
2. Although the King Korg has 6 virtual patch cords for modulation on each layer (Timbre A and B). LFO1 and LFO2 and EG1 and EG2 seem to be hard wired to the filter and Amp. Disconnecting all the "virtual" cords wont disable those hard coded modulation connections, although you can easily set the LFO/EG modulation intensity to zero so they have no effect.
Thanks again Dan for helping to make synth coding much more fun!
