Sorry for the late reply but I've only just been experiencing this problem myself and checked this forum for answers.  In MainStage v3.1.1, bidirectional communication works perfectly.  I've been using MS v3.1.1 for the past 2 years or so and haven't bothered with the v3.2.x updates because they were too buggy.  However, I've been playing around with v3.2.4 since it was released last week but only realised this weekend that bidirectional communication with MIDI Designer no longer works...and I can only assume this stopped working sometime since v3.2.0 was released.  I've sent feedback to Apple via the MS  "Provide MainStage Feedback" menu option, asking Apple to clarify if this feature has been removed or if the lack of bidirectional communication is a bug.  Can I suggest that you also contact Apple about this?  They won't listen unless multiple users get on their case about it.
