To connect directly from the iPad you will need either a USB B - USB C cable (newer iPads, including Pros), or a USB B - Lightning cable (older iPads).  With the USB - B (square) connection, these are commonly referred to as printer cables.

If the RD-88 midi driver (System / General / Midi Driver) is set to "vendor", select "generic" for midi driver, save the setting, and reboot the RD-88.
